Joy Defined- A Simple Advent Reflection

The third week of Advent focuses on joy. Many people equate joy with happiness and that these two words are interchangeable. But, joy is in fact different. Happiness is an outward expression of an inward emotion that is often fleeting. Happiness can come and go, sometimes quickly based on the circumstances around us. Didn’t get mando’d? You will probably experience relief and happiness. Did your vacation time get approved or, did you get the promotion that you have been working so hard for? Then you will probably have feelings of happiness and excitement. After a bit of time has passed, that feeling starts to wane or, one bad interaction with another individual and that feeling of happiness gets replaced by feelings of frustration and anger. Happiness comes and goes like the wind.

So, what is joy? True joy is deeply embedded peace, contentment, and satisfaction that is a constant presence no matter the circumstance. Joy is deliberate and intentional. It is a purposeful choice and must be practiced, which in our line of work and in today’s difficult world, can really test our will to stay in a place of peace and joy. When we are blindsided by problems with work or family, it can be quite challenging to not slip into bitterness. Joy comes from deep soul work, a connection to faith, and the ability to practice standing firm in your beliefs no matter what you are facing. It can feel impossible at times. Advent is a time of the year when we are reminded that true joy comes from the hope we have in the birth of our Savior. We know that despite what happens in this life, victory is ours. We win in the end! One day we will no longer be burdened by human sin and the suffering that comes from sin. When we keep our eyes focused on the final outcome of this life, we can settle into a place of unwavering peace. The lights of the holiday season are constant reminders of this joy that is a gift freely given to those that seek it. Whether it’s the soft glowing colored light emanating from a strand of Christmas tree lights, the flickering light of a holiday candle on the kitchen counter, or the reflection of light on a brightly painted ornament, we can be reminded that true joy does exist here on earth. Sometimes we just have to look for it in the simplest of places. Keep looking for that light!
